Wichita schools replace tip line with smartphone app

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita Public Schools and law enforcement are are revamping their tip line program.

“Speak Up” has been around for about a decade as a kind of CrimeStoppers for students, but now it’s changing. Now, instead of sending a text or phone call to report a concern a student might have, they can download the “P3” app for Android or iPhone and send in anonymous tips, including photos, videos or screenshots.

USD 259 safety director Terri Moses said it lets faculty step in to help any student dealing with bullying, suicidial thoughts, drugs, or other problems.

Dan Dillon with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s office said the anonymous reporting lets students avoid negative peer pressure, which he said is “very strong for middle and high school students.” Dillon said he thinks tragedies like a student bringing a gun to school can be avoided with this program.

To download the app, search “P3 Tips” in the Google Play store or on the iOS AppStore.

Parents or students who do not wish to use the app can instead call (316)267-2111 to make a report or visit usd259.org/speakup.
