Ribbon cutting Wednesday for new mural at Evergreen Rec Center

WICHITA, Kan. – A ceremonial ribbon cutting Wednesday celebrated the completion of a new mural at the Evergreen Recreation Center in north Wichita.

Two artists from Colombia, Felipe Ortiz and Ivan Salazar, painted the mural at the rec center near 25th St N and Arkansas as part of the Horizontes Project. Local artist Armando Minjarez is leading that project to paint cultural murals in north and northeast Wichita.

One of those murals could be the largest mural painted by a single artist in North America, once it’s complete. Another artist raised in Colombia, “GLeo,” is painting a grain elevator just southeast of 21st St N and Broadway.

Drivers on 13th St N might have noticed new murals on the Santa Fe Avenue train bridge in the last month. Those are also part of the Horizontes project.

Horizontes is accepting donations to pay for equipment rental, storage, paint and other materials. Click here to find out more about the group.
