Construction agreement approved for Wichita stadium project

Wichita city council members have voted unanimously to approve an agreement with a design and construction team for an $83 million baseball stadium complex.

Assistant city manager Scot Rigby said the stadium will have a minimum of 10,000 seats and it will have the flexibility to host baseball and other sporting events along with concerts and festivals. The project also includes a baseball hall of fame museum.

The agreement is with a team that includes JE Dunn Construction of Kansas City, Eby Construction of Wichita, Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture, DLR Group and Professional Engineering Consultants.

The project is to be completed by March of 2020 in time for a Triple A team to begin play in Wichita.   The team is relocating to Wichita from New Orleans.

The agreement was on the council agenda last week, but four members wanted to delay action until they could have time to study the agreement.

To fund the project, the city is creating a property tax financing district as well as a district for STAR Bonds, which are supported by sales tax revenues from businesses within the district.
