Wichita gets lead removal grant

The city of Wichita is receiving a federal grant to help deal with homes that still have lead-based paint.  The $1.6 million grant is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Wichita’s director of housing, John Hall, said the three-year grant will be used to provide lead reduction or elimination for 110 homes.  Hall said it’s estimated that around 12,000 homes in the city have lead-based paint that was used prior to 1978, but the focus of the Lead Safe Wichita program will be on households with children under 6 who have tested for elevated blood levels of lead.

Vice-mayor Bryan Frye said the program will provide safer homes for low income families with children.  He said the city will be working with the Healthy Homes Program, the Wichita-Sedgwick County Division of Health, the Kansas Health Foundation, the Wichita Housing Authority and the Kansas Safety Training Center.     The city will work with local contractors who have appropriate lead removal training and certifications.
