DUI enforcement stepped up through New Year’s

Now through January 1, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will be conduction extra DUI patrols.

The period between Christmas and New Year’s Day sees some of the highest DUI rates of the year, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation. Up to 300 DUI arrests are expected over the next week. Law enforcement statewide are participating in the Taking Down DUI campaign, in an effort to prevent crashes that could result in serious injury and death.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is also asking drivers to use their seatbelts, saying the fatality rate is twice as high for drivers who are in a crash and unrestrained. All driving laws will be enforced during the DUI patrols. Even if a driver is buckled up, they can still get a ticket if passengers are unrestrained.
