Rain and strong winds expected across Kansas

A new storm system will bring rain, storms and powerful winds to Kansas Tuesday night into Wednesday.

Moderate to heavy rains fell across south central Kansas Tuesday morning with some reports of pea sized hail in south Wichita.  A weather spotter reported three-quarter-inch hail near Udall.  No severe weather was reported.

Flood warnings have been issued for rivers and streams in north central Kansas, and record flooding was expected on the Smoky Hill River near Mentor, in Saline County.

The main storm system will move into southwestern Kansas Tuesday night with widespread heavy rains and some scattered storms.   Rainfall amounts were expected to be 1 to 2 inches, creating flooding concerns across western and central areas of Kansas.   A flood watch was in effect for the western half of the state extending into central areas, including Reno, Rice and McPherson counties.

A High Wind Watch has also been issued for south central Kansas for Wednesday afternoon and evening.  Winds will be gusting over 50 miles an hour.  The rain activity is expected to end Wednesday evening.   Northwest Kansas could get an inch or two of snow with the system as colder air moves in early Thursday.

Meteorologists have said that the low pressure center moving in with the storm system will create conditions similar to a Category 2 hurricane.
