Trial scheduled to begin in Hilyard case

The woman accused of killing her ex-boyfriend’s mother in April of 2017, is scheduled to go on trial this week in Sedgwick County District Court.

Rachael Hilyard is accused of first-degree murder in the death of 63-year-old Micki Bells.  She has pleaded not guilty.

Hilyard has undergone two mental evaluations since her arrest in 2017.  The second one conducted last year found that she was competent to stand trial.

She pleaded not guilty and waived her right to a preliminary hearing in August.  A trial date had been set for September, but had to be rescheduled to this week.

Police were called to a home near Pawnee and Seneca in April of 2017 by a 9-year-old boy.  The boy had gone with his grandmother Micki Bells to retrieve property Bells son had at the home of his ex-girlfriend Hilyard.

Police say Hilyard began attacking Bells.  The boy was able to get away and call 911.

When officers arrived they found Bells body in the garage of Hilyard’s home in the 1400 block of West Rita.
