Rice County undersheriff expected to recover after shooting

Rice County undersheriff Chad Murphy is now listed in serious condition at a Wichita hospital after he was shot earlier this week, and the prognosis for his recovery is good.

That’s the latest word from the Rice County sheriff’s office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation on Monday’s shootings near the towns of Sterling and Raymond.

Murphy was shot after stopping a car north of Sterling, and a short time later, sheriff Bryant Evans was shot at a home near Raymond.   The suspect, 37-year-old David Madden, was later found dead in the home along with his 65-year-old father, Thomas.   Investigators believe Madden shot his father and then turned the gun on himself.

Sheriff Evans was treated and released for a leg injury.

A fund has been established at the Alden State Bank, and donations can be made there or sent to the bank at the address:  Alden State Bank, Attn: Chad Murphy Fund, P.O. Box 288, Sterling, KS 67579.

The KBI said the investigation into the shootings has brought up questions about the 2015 disappearance of 22-year-old Megan Foglesong, an Illinois woman who was last seen in Rice County.  David Madden was a suspect in the case.  The KBI says no new information has been discovered at this point on the woman’s disappearance.  If anyone has information, they are urged to contact the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME.
