Northbound and southbound lanes of the Turnpike are now open near the Kansas and Oklahoma border.

Floodwaters around Interstate 35 between South Haven and Wellington have receded, and crews were able to lay new asphalt Thursday.

“The first 24 hours belonged to Mother Nature; the second 24 hours belonged to us,” the Kansas Turnpike Authority tweeted.

Flooding this week had the turnpike entirely closed for a day between Wellington and South Haven, near the Oklahoma state line.  Southbound lanes opened Thursday, while northbound lanes remained closed. By Thursday night, crews had repaired the road and opened the interstate less than 48 hours after water had rushed over the highway.
