Newton commission approves Sunday liquor sales

People who live in Newton may be able to buy liquor on Sundays later this year without needing to travel.

The Newton City Commission approved an ordinance Tuesday that would make it legal to sell liquor on Sundays in the city. The commission passed the ordinance 4-1, with Newton Mayor Kathy Valentine the only vote against it.

Liquor sales on Sundays in Newton will begin in September, unless a protest petition is filed and gathers 375 signatures. If a protest gathers enough signatures, voters in Newton would make the final decision on whether to allow those sales.

The ordinance will also make it legal to sell liquor on certain holidays in Newton.

The website localalcohollaws.com reports you can currently purchase alcohol in Wichita on Sundays between noon and 8 p.m.
