Severe storms developed in southern Kansas Friday afternoon with a confirmed tornado in Butler County and heavy rains and flooding throughout the Wichita area.

A tornado was reported in southern Douglass, in Butler County, shortly after 4 p.m. and damage was reported to large trees and power poles. There were no reports of injuries.  The storm moved on to the northeast into Greenwood County, but there were no further reports of tornado activity.

A severe storm moved through Wichita shortly before 5 p.m. with 60 mph winds and heavy rains that caused flash flooding on a number of streets.  Visibility was low with the intense rain and strong winds from the storm.    Flooded roadways were reported at 215th Street West and Maple, 119th Street West and Central, 13th and Ridge, and other locations. Mt. Vernon was not passable east of George Washington Boulevard because of high water.

Flash flood warnings were issued for Sedgwick, Harvey, Butler, Sumner, Chase, Marion, Harper and Kingman counties into the late night hours.

Streets were flooded in Augusta, and there was four to six inches of water over Highway 54.   There was also a report of water flowing into a home in Potwin.

Quarter sized hail was reported in the Wichita area and in Leon as the storms moved through the area.

A tornado watch was in effect through 10 p.m. for all of south central Kansas into north central Oklahoma.
