The Sheriff’s Office will now help inmates get Social Security Cards when they are close to being released from the Sedgwick County Jail.
The Sedgwick County Offender Re-Entry, or SCORE program, got federal approval to help inmates get the cards. The Sheriff’s Office says getting ID cards is an important step in getting housing, jobs and medical services after inmates are released.
The Sheriff’s Office said the rate of released inmates going back to jail within two years is at 60 percent, and that the SCORE Porgram is an effort to break the cycle of recidivism.
