Sedgwick County commissioner Jim Howell has started a GoFundMe page for a Derby man whose family is looking to replace a wheelchair van.
Howell said 22-year-old John Hunter has Cerebral Palsy and is disabled, and the Hunter family has been using a 1997 Dodge Caravan that needs more and more repairs. Howell said a used wheelchair van usually costs around $22,000 while a new one would cost $60,000. Howell has set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of $15,000, and so far it has raised more than $13,000.
Howell said during Wednesday’s county commission meeting that the Hunter family has given a lot to the Derby community and they have been struggling with health and financial issues. He said the cost of replacing the wheelchair van will be overwhelming, so he is asking people to make donations through the GoFundMe website to help the family.
