The Wichita Fire Department credits working smoke detectors in saving two families in recent separate house fires.

The first fire was reported shortly after 6 a.m. in the 12000 block of Willowgreen Court, near Pawnee and 127th Street East.  When crews arrived they found smoke and flames coming from the garage.

The fire was eventually brought under control, but caused $100,000 in damage to the home and its contents.  The cause of the fire was a cigarette that had been discarded in a plastic trash can in the garage.

The second fire was reported shortly before 2 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Stoneybrook Circle, near Lincoln and Webb Road.  The cause of that fire was determined to be food left cooking unattended on a stove.

Damage is estimated at $130,000.  Fire Lt. Jose Ocadiz says in both fires, a working smoke detector alerted the residents who were then able to escape safely.
