Contracts approved for scooter rentals in Wichita

Without comment, the Wichita city council has approved contracts with two firms to rent electric scooters for use in the downtown area.

The contracts will allow Veoride Scooters and Zagster to set up rental operations.  Each company plans to deploy 500 scooters in the near future.  Zagster already operates the Bike Share ICT system for bicycle rentals downtown and in Old Town.

The companies will operate under a 12-month pilot program.  The city council approved an ordinance in June to set up regulations for electric scooters with safety requirements.

Veoride has bike share systems at three locations in Kansas and a number of communities across the U.S., while Zagster has 250 bike and scooter share programs in 35 states.

Each company will pay the city a $500 permit application fee along with a fee of 15 cents per ride.

There are several rules in place that the scooter users and companies will have to follow.

  • Speeds are limited to 15-mph.
  • Scooter must use streets and bike lanes, not sidewalks.
  • Scooters must be parked out of pedestrian paths and off of streets, unless special spots are available.
  • Computers on the scooters will keep them from operating between dusk and dawn.
  • GPS systems will shut the scooters down if they enter certain areas.
  • Users will have to take a photo of a scooter once it’s parked to make sure it’s in an allowed space.

A full list of regulations for scooter use is available here.
