Fewer fireworks citations issued in Wichita this year

Teams of Wichita police officers and firefighters were watching for illegal fireworks use during the July 4th holiday period, and they ended up writing 58 citations.

Wichita fire marshal Stuart Bevis said there were ten citations issued on July 3rd and 48 on July 4th.  That’s below the number of around 140 issued a year ago, but Bevis said there is still a significant number of people who continue to shoot illegal fireworks in the city.  He said there were people complaining about the level of enforcement, but others felt it was making a difference.   The city did not make any changes in its fireworks ordinance for this year, but there have been more aggressive enforcement efforts over the past couple of years.

Bevis said more data is being put together and a report will be presented to the city council later to determine if any changes are needed for the city’s fireworks ordinance.
