Fire and rescue crews were able to rescue a woman, her seven-year-old child and the family dog after a weekend kayak activity went wrong Sunday morning in northwest Wichita.

Fire marshal Stuart Bevis said crews got a call around 10:50 a.m. about two people in distress in the Arkansas River.  Crews found a woman clinging to a bridge pylon with a seven-year-old child, and a dog was in the kayak floating nearby.

Bevis said a rescuer was lowered from the bridge and other crew members worked to get a water craft in close to get the child and the dog free.   The woman fell into the water but crews got her out before she could go over the dam, and there were no injuries from the situation.

Bevis said people who plan to kayak in the river should not enter north of the dam, because that puts them in a very dangerous situation.   He said people can get caught in the water at the dam and then they would be forced underwater.
