Hutchinson police officers cleared in June 20th shooting

Reno County district attorney Keith Schroeder has cleared Hutchinson police officers of wrongdoing in the shooting of an armed suspect during a standoff in June.

21-year-old Brendan Jones was injured on June 20th during a standoff at a home in the 300 block of West 8th, in northwest Hutchinson.  Schroeder said Jones walked out of the home and fired a number of shots and officers and they returned fire.  Jones went back into the house and continued firing shots, and a few minutes later he told a negotiator that he had been injured and needed help.   He was taken into custody after he crawled out of the home.

Schroeder said the officers involved in the shooting had an objective and reasonable belief that the use of lethal force was necessary to protect themselves and others from injury or death.  He said their reactions were legally justified.

Jones is still facing charges in connection with the standoff.
