Two red panda cubs die at Garden City zoo

Two newborn red panda cubs in Garden City have died. The cubs were part of a set of quadruplets born July 17 at the Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City.

Zookeepers say one cub was born with injuries “of unknown origin” and the other passed while in its mother’s care.

The Zoo marked the birth of the quadruplets last week with a video post on their Facebook page. The zoo’s nine-year-old red panda, Ember, gave birth to the quadruplets and zookeepers acted quickly to take care of two babies themselves in order to give them the best chance at life. This was Ember’s sixth litter.

Less than 1% of red panda litters are quadruplets.

If you’re interested in seeing the new baby panda cubs, they won’t be outside for the public to see until late September or early October.
