Wichita State University officials are working on a policy to safely and legally allow electric scooters on the campus.

WSU police chief Rodney Clark issued a statement Friday saying that the university has started researching e-scooter experiences around the country, and they will be watching for the results of the pilot program recently launched by the city of Wichita.

Zagster, which provides bicycles under the Bike Share ICT program, has deployed 500 scooters around the city, some near the WSU campus.  Two other companies are planning to deploy scooters for the downtown area and possibly other locations.

Clark said WSU expects to have a draft this fall of a university policy on the use of e-scooters, and that will be based on input from the student, faculty and staff senate organizations as well as input from the public.    Anyone with e-scooter experiences is asked to share them with WSU officials by email at police@wichita.edu

Clark said the safety of students, employees and visitors will always be a top priority.   He said with increasing usage around the country, scooters have been found to be fun and convenient, but they can also present safety hazards.
