There’s no word on the cause of a fire that left heavy damage to an historic building in downtown Wichita.

The August 21st fire caused just over a million dollars in damage to the former Occidental Hotel at 2nd and Main, with $50,000 in damage to the contents.   Wichita fire marshal Stuart Bevis said there may have to be a lot of reconstruction to support the roof of the three-story building.  The fire broke out on the top floor and roof area, but the rest of the building had water damage.

The second and third floors of the building were being remodeled into apartments, and the first floor was being used as office space.

No injuries were reported from the fire.   Investigators are still gathering information, and Bevis said it has been difficult to get a determination on the cause.
