Woman arrested after jumping into a pond while fleeing car chase

A 22-year-old woman has been jailed after leading police on a chase in a stolen car that ended in a crash and with her jumping into a pond to try to escape.

It began around 11:30 p.m. Monday when police tried to pull over a white 2017 Honda Civic that had an illegal tag on it near 13th and Harding, between Oliver and Edgemoor.  The car had also been reported stolen in October.

The driver took off and led police on a brief chase that ended when the driver crashed into a tree and pole at North Lawrence Lane and North Rutland St., just south of 13th Street between Woodlawn and Oliver.

The woman jumped out of the car and ran into a nearby pond to try to get away.  She was taken into custody and booked into jail on charges of evade and elude, resisting arrest, auto theft, and numerous traffic charges.
