Disaster declaration issued for grass fires in northwest Kansas

Governor Kelly has issued a disaster declaration for Cheyenne County in northwest Kansas, after a series of grass fires broke out Saturday.

The fires started along U.S. Highway 36 in Saint Francis.   Firefighters were able to contain the fire.  Several homes were evacuated and more residents were ready to leave if necessary.

The governor said the declaration will allow state agencies to provide assistance for the fire.  She said in a press release, “We want to do everything we can to help the local first responders get these fires under control as quickly as possible.”
