General election results are now official in Sedgwick County

General election results are now official in Sedgwick County

The Sedgwick County election office has finalized the results of the November 5th general election for city and school board offices.   There were 61,502 ballots cast, for a turnout of 20.32 percent.

In the Wichita mayor’s race, challenger Brandon Whipple won with 23,174 votes, for 46.43 percent of the vote.  Incumbent Jeff Longwell had 17,969 votes for an even 36 percent, and write-in candidate Lyndy Wells had 8,426 votes for 16.88 percent.   Another write-in candidate, Mark Gietzen, had 89 votes for 0.18 percent.

There were 156 names that turned up in the write-in category for mayor.    Some city council members were written in, along with former mayors Bob Knight and Carl Brewer.  There were also names like “Mickey Mouse,” “Donald Duck,” “Rocket J. Squirrel,” and “Jesus Christ.”    Lyndy Wells also turned up on write in ballots for mayor’s races in Bel Aire, Clearwater, Derby and Goddard.

Brandon Whipple will take office in January as mayor of Wichita.
