Wichita mayor visits call center to see coronavirus response effort

Wichita mayor Brandon Whipple paid a visit to the United Way of the Plains Monday morning to talk with staff at the 211 call center and hear about their efforts to educate people on the coronavirus outbreak.

Whipple said the call center is bringing out the best in Wichita, providing help to people who are in self quarantine and need information or resources, and also providing assistance to people who have been laid off because of the virus outbreak.    He said the activities of the call center will compliment the activities of government and local agencies to help people with access to resources.

With stay-at-home orders in effect for Sedgwick County and the state of Kansas, Whipple said police officers are working to educate people on the importance of staying at home.

United Way spokesman Delane Butler said the call center has received over 6,000 calls since March 9th, and over 2,000 have been related to the coronavirus situation.  He said the call center is getting more than 500 calls a day.
