Governor signs new executive orders to ease unemployment filing

Governor Laura Kelly has signed two new executive order to make it easier for Kansans to file for unemployment.

The first order will allow Kansans to draw down benefits from the federal stimulus package which makes more residents eligible for unemployment benefits, including gig or contract workers and small business owners.  Kansans who qualify will also receive $600 more in benefits per week.

The second executive order waives the waiting week requirement for unemployment and the requirement that those seeking unemployment must actively seek new employment.  Also, employers must notify employees who are losing their job that they qualify for benefits.

The change was required in order for the state to qualify for federal stimulus money.

The governor is recommending that if you want to file for unemployment, that you do so online at getKansasbenefits.gov.  If you do need assistance by phone, you are asked to have patience as they work to train more state employees to man the phone lines.
