Utility disconnects suspended to May 31

The Kansas Corporation Commission is extending its emergency order suspending utility disconnects through May 31.

Because of the spike in unemployment during the COVID-19 outbreak, there is concern that a lot of people may not be able to pay their bills on time. Disconnects were originally suspended to to May 15, but this order was extended because of the ongoing pandemic.

By extending the suspension to May 31, the KCC is aligning their own order with one from Governor Kelly, that prevents utilities not under KCC jurisdiction from being turned off through the 31st.

“Even as the state begins the phased reopening process, Kansans continue to deal with the financial challenges brought about by COVID-19.  Maintaining utility services is critical to ensure public health and safety as the state works toward recovery,” said Commission Chair Susan Duffy.

This order may extended further if needed.
