Barber County reaches settlement in fatal beanbag shooting

Barber County reached a $3.5-million settlement with family of a man who died after being shot with a beanbag.

42-year-old Steven Myers died after being shot in the chest with a beanbag round in 2017. Law enforcement had been told he was drunk and threatening people with a gun at a bar. Myers was later located in a shed and found to be unarmed.

Undersheriff Virgil Brewer was charged for Myers’ death. Prosecutors said he had not been properly trained to use a beanbag round, and that he shot Myers at an unsafe distance. Video from body cameras also showed that Myers appeared to be following commands when he was shot.

“There is nothing in this world that could ever replace my husband,” said Steven’s widow, Kristina Myers. “I’d give anything to have my husband back, for my children to have their father, and for Steven’s family to have him once again. But with this settlement, Steven’s name will finally be cleared. This horrible chapter of our lives will finally come to a close, and our children can find their new normal.”

This settlement had been reached earlier this year, but it included a non-disclosure clause that expired today.
