Kansas to investigate unemployment system failure

A legislative committee will be looking into the failure of the Kansas unemployment system during a wave of covid-related layoffs.

The Legislative Post Audit Committee approved an investigation of the Department of Labor’s response since the beginning of the outbreak.

“Thousands of unemployed Kansans were let down by the safety net designed to protect them during this unforeseen setback. We, as a legislature, have a duty to our constituents to get to the bottom of this problem and I thank the committee for the unanimous support,” said Post Audit Committee Chair Senator Julia Lynn. “I am very interested to see what this audit uncovers, particularly from the boots on the ground employees who work day in and day out processing claims.”

This audit is happening to two different phases, although both are being conducted at the same time. The process will include anonymous feedback from DOL employees and an investigation into factors that led to the breakdown of the state’s unemployment system.

Results from this investigation should be available for review withing five months.
