Wichita businesses close early as precaution against protests

After a protest incident turned violent in northwest Wichita Monday night, businesses across the city were taking steps to protect against any further demonstrations Tuesday.

Stores at NewMarket Square at 21st and Maize closed early and some windows were boarded up.   Similar precautions were taken at Bradley Fair in northeast Wichita, and there were steps being taken at Towne East Square late Tuesday afternoon.

The Monday night protest resulted in a broken plate glass window at one business near 21st and Arkansas, and three police officers had minor injuries when protesters threw rocks, bottles and other objects at police.  Some shots were fired by people in the crowd, but no one was hit.

Some protesters were gathering for peaceful demonstrations Tuesday evening, and police were watching several areas to be ready for any disturbances.   Wichita religious leaders urged people to carry out peaceful protests during a prayer event with Mayor Brandon Whipple Tuesday afternoon.

Protests have led to violence in cities across the country as demonstrators call for justice in the death of George Floyd, who died last week after being arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
