New case of coronavirus reported at Sedgwick County jail

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office said Friday another inmate at the county jail has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus, and the case is not related to previous cases that have been reported among inmates.

In a press release, the Sheriff’s Office said the inmate reported that he was sick on July 27th, and he was placed in medical isolation.  The inmate was released from custody before the positive test results came back on July 30th.

The jail’s medical provider will offer testing to 27 staff members and 78 inmates who had possible contact with the affected inmate.   There are 76 inmates who will be quarantined until they are medically cleared.  Two inmates that had symptoms were already tested and placed in medical isolation.

Four inmates were released from the jail before the positive test results were in on the affected inmate.   State health officials will be contacting those former inmates.  The Sheriff’s Office will also contact judges, members of the district attorney’s office and defense attorneys about the positive case.
