Wichita mayor Brandon Whipple said the city’s mask order has been working to slow the spread of the coronavirus.   Speaking at his weekly news conference Thursday, the mayor said hospitalizations have been down in the past week, and the percentage of positive cases from testing has dropped from 14 to around 10 percent.

The mask order was implemented on July 3rd, and the city council voted Tuesday to extend it another four weeks, to September 8th.

The mayor said he’s very concerned about the next few weeks, and as students return to school and the fall season begins, Wichita residents need to help contain and control the spread of the virus.  He said other communities have been able to do this by wearing masks, practicing social distancing and avoiding large gatherings.    Whipple said people have been focused on the development of a vaccine, but other countries have been able to contain the spread of COVID-19 with masks and health practices.
