Police from Wichita and other communities will join county sheriff’s offices and the Kansas Highway Patrol for a traffic enforcement effort going into the Labor Day weekend.

The program is called “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose,” and it’s being funded by a federal grant through the Kansas Department of Transportation.   Law enforcement agencies will have extra officers watching streets and highways for drunk drivers.

Wichita police captain Brent Allred said the campaign will run through Labor Day, September 7th.   He said people should have a designated driver if they’re going to be drinking alcohol, or they should avoid getting behind the wheel.    Allred said more DUI arrests are being made during daytime hours as a result of prescription medicines.  He said drivers should check the instructions with their medication for any driving warnings.

Wichita police are planning an enforcement campaign on August 29th and on another day in September that has not yet been scheduled.   Allred said the enforcement will be citywide and they’ll be watching high accident locations.
