City council approves relocation of southeast Wichita library branch

Wichita city council members have approved a project to move a library branch to a new location in the southeast part of the city.

The Linwood branch has been located in the Linwood Recreation Center since 1981, but the city has now leased space in a building at 4195 East Harry, next to the WSU Tech South Campus complex.

The building on Harry has 6,904 square feet of space, compared to the 3,752 square feet in the current Linwood branch.  Library director Cynthia Berner said the new location will provide for disability access, expanded space for public computing, meeting rooms with after-hours capability, and improved service schedules.    Council member James Clendenin said the new location will serve several neighborhoods.   He said there will be discussions about continuing to provide materials and services to people who have been using the Linwood branch.

Berner said the Linwood name will not be suitable for the new location, so the library board will function as a naming committee.  They will get public input and recommend a new name to the city council.   The new branch is expected to be ready later this year.   The city council approved a budget of $500,000 for the relocation.
