A Wichita hotel company has paid back wages to 13 workers after federal investigators found that the hotel wrongly denied sick leave to the workers.
The employees of the Best Western Plus Wichita Hotel had tested positive for COVID-19, and they were required to quarantine. The U.S. Department of Labor and its Wage and Hour Division conducted an investigation, and found that the hotel had violated provisions of the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.
The hotel paid $5,693 in back wages to the workers, and it has agreed to future compliance with the FFCRA. The company has three locations in Wichita.
The federal law qualifies employees for paid sick time to care for themselves and their families due to coronavirus-related reasons. The Wage and Hour Division is urging employers and workers to call the division for assistance in understanding the requirements of the law.
