First round of winter weather hits Wichita area

An overnight mix of sleet and snow continued into Monday morning, leading to a rough commute across the Wichita.

Scattered crashes and slideoffs backed up traffic at closed southbound I-135 at 21st for a while. No serious injuries were reported from any of the crashes. Wichita’s online traffic camera platform has been overhauled and can give you a good idea of what traffic is like before you head out the door. This includes live camera feeds across the city.

The Wichita area is expecting up to 2-inches of accumulation, with locally heavier amounts possible across the Flint Hills. A mix of sleet and snow is expected to continue today, turning to freezing drizzle tomorrow. A winter weather advisory will continue until 1 a.m. Tuesday.  As of 9 a.m. Monday, Wichita has seen about an inch of snow, Clearwater is reporting 1.5-inches, Valley Center has 1.3-inches, with Maize, Colwich, and Goddard each reporting 1-inch.

Wichita’s plow truck drivers will be working to keep roads clear into Wednesday afternoon. A mix of sleet and snow is expected tonight, turning into freezing rain Tuesday. More rain is in the forecast for Wednesday, but temperatures expected to stay above freezing.

Some districts cancelled class because of today’s weather, while other districts decided to continue classes online. Many schools are set up for remote learning because of the COVID outbreak, which will nearly eliminate the need for snow days in some cases. Closings and Delays List
