Design and construction work is getting started for a sports museum that will be located at the new Riverfront Stadium in Wichita.

The city council has approved a contract to provide $600,000 for the museum, and that is part of the $77 million in funding that was approved in 2018 for the construction of the stadium.

Assistant city engineer Paul Gunzelman said a team including Eby Construction and Schaefer Johnson Cox Frey Architecture was chosen for the project.  The National Baseball Congress Foundation will gather artifacts for display in the museum.

It’s not known when the stadium will open.  The stadium will host the Wichita Wind Surge baseball team and it will also be used for other sports and activities.   Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple said he is anxious for the stadium to open when it is safe to do so, and he said the opening will be a signal that the community is recovering from the coronavirus pandemic.
