Wichita police have arrested a 46-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman in connection with Saturday’s incident that left three police officers with injuries.

Police chief Gordon Ramsay said the two were arrested Sunday at the home in the 1400 block of South St. Francis where the officers were injured.

Chief Ramsay said one officer has been released, and another was released early Monday.  The third officer was expected to be released late in the day Monday.   All three officers had leg injuries.    The chief said two of the officers should recover and return to duty.   The third officer may have some long-term issues with his injury, but Ramsay said there is optimism for the officer’s recovery and return.

The chief said there was a loaded, sawed-off shotgun that was left in a side pouch on a recliner near an entrance to the home.  The shotgun had no trigger guard, and Ramsay said that made it very dangerous.   It’s believed the chair was bumped or a cord was bumped, causing the gun to go off.   Ramsay said it’s not believed that this was a trap or an ambush that had been set.   He said there was birdshot in the shotgun.

Ramsay said the man and woman had been staying at the home, but they left before officers arrived at the home on Saturday.   He said the man has previous felony convictions.

Police released photos of the shotgun involved in the incident.  The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are helping with the investigation.
