Contraband found in packages sent to Sedgwick County jail inmates

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is investigating contraband items that have been mailed to inmates at the county jail.

There have been several allegations of drugs and other contraband being sent to the Sedgwick County Detention Facility by way of forged inmate legal mail the past few months.

On March 9th, the facility received a package that was addressed to an inmate. The return address on the package was from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.

Investigators consulted with the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Legal Advisor, and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division. It was determined that there was enough evidence to suggest that the package was not official legal mail and a fake return address had been used.

Contained within the package were approximately 5 grams of K2–a synthetic cannabinoid–and around 32 rolling papers. The contents were then submitted as evidence and a case has been opened to find the people involved.

Once the investigation is completed, it will be presented to the District Attorney’s office.
