Ascension Via Christi in Wichita is one of the stops for a traveling “pandemic crucifix” that will visit 19 states and the District of Columbia.

The crucifix was presented to Ascension’s office in St. Louis in December by Archbishop Mitchell Rozanski of the St. Louis Archdiocese.   Hospital officials said it is similar to a crucifix that inspired the people of Rome to turn to God for hope and healing during an epidemic in 1522.  That crucifix was brought back to Rome by Pope Francis in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The crucifix was in Manhattan, Kansas earlier in the week, and it arrived at Ascension Via Christi in Wichita.  It will be at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Sunday, March 21st from 4 to 5 p.m. to allow people to gather for prayer and reflection.

The crucifix will travel to Pittsburg and Fort Scott on March 25th and 26th.
