The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is getting reports of scam callers claiming to be deputies and demanding payments for fines.
Callers may claim you have an arrest warrant after failing to appear in court as a witness. The caller will try and get you to pay a fine in order to have the warrant put on hold, but the real Sheriff’s Office does not operate like this. Sheriff’s employees will never ask for payment of a fine over the phone or in person.
Even if your caller ID shows a call coming from the Sheriff’s Office, keep in mind scammers are able to make your caller ID show whatever they want.
If you get a call like this and are not sure if it’s real, your best option is to hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office yourself at 316-660-3880.
