Health Officials Declare Tanganyika Splash Park Safe to Reopen

According to various health organizations, The Tanganyika Fall Splash Park in Goddard exceeded the re-opening suggestions for splash park safety and will be re-opening this weekend.

The Park has been closed since June 19th, resulting from a Shigella outbreak. Eight people that visited the Splash Park on June 11th tested positive for the bacteria.

Sedgwick County Health Officer Dr. Garold Minns, along with the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) approved the re-opening after the park implemented enhancements to the facility in June and July.

The approval came following a reports by an independent aquatic design firm, chemical testing, and inspection performed by the SCHD along with an independent pool inspector and staff with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Park’s improvements met the CDC’s Model Aquatic Health Code.

Those who visited the Tanganyika Wildlife Park from May 28th through June 19th are asked to complete a survey to help investigators determine the cause of the Shigella outbreak and the number of people affected. Those who became ill as well as those who did not become ill after visiting the Park during those dates should take the survey, which you can view here.
