The expiration of federal tenant protections [on July 31st] has raised concerns that thousands of Kansas residents will be unable to afford their rent and face eviction.
The state has set aside $220 million in federal funding to help with outstanding rents, utility payment and other expenses, but the money has been slow to filter out to those who need it.
Advocates say a spike in homelessness could happen soon after the CDC’s evictions moratorium ends Saturday because Kansas has one of the country’s shortest timeframes to evict tenants.
In Wichita, the Salvation Army already seeing an increase in calls from people asking for shelter.
