The National Weather Service has added a new alert to the wireless emergency alert that can be sent to smart phones and newer models of cell phones.
The alerts have been sent for tornado warnings and flash flood warnings. They will now be sent out for severe thunderstorm warnings where the storm has baseball-sized hail or 80 mile-an-hour winds, or both.
The wireless alert will only appear one time on a smart phone.
Meteorologist Vanessa Pearce with the National Weather Service office in Wichita said the storms with destructive hail and winds don’t happen very often. She said they usually occur once every storm season, so people won’t be seeing alerts on their smart phones very often.
