Wichita woman gets almost ten years for fatal 2019 shooting

A Wichita woman has been sentenced to almost ten years in prison for the shooting death of a man who worked for her at an illegal gambling hall.

A judge sentenced 47-year-old Stacey Peters to 117 months in prison during a court appearance Wednesday.  She had pleaded guilty in June to second degree murder and one count of commercial gambling.

Prosecutors said 41-year-old Robert Duvaul was found on November 19th, 2019 at a business at 3072 South Hillside.   Peters had called 911 to report that she shot an intruder, but officers determined that Duvaul had been dead for some time before the 911 call.   Police also found evidence of illegal commercial gambling devices in the building, and surveillance video showed that Peters was operating a gambling establishment.   The video also showed Peters and Duvaul working together earlier on the evening of the shooting.  One portion of the video showed Duvaul with his hands up, then he staggered backwards and collapsed.

Testimony at the June hearing indicated that Peters and Duvaul had been in an on-and-off dating relationship for about five years.   Judge Bruce Brown found that Duvaul’s death was a domestic violence offense.
