Inmate charged in Sedgwick County jail assault

Charges have been filed against a Sedgwick County Detention Center inmate who got into a fight with three deputies who were taking him back to his cell.

56-year-old James E. Brown of Wichita was charged with attempted first degree murder, battery against a law enforcement officer, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of criminal threat, and traffic in contraband in a correctional institution.   His bond was set at $500,000 and his next court appearance is scheduled for September 30th.

Prosecutors said Brown brought out a metal shank and swung it at three deputies in a late-night incident on September 8th.    Two deputies ended up with injuries to their hands.

Brown was arrested in March for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a sword and stabbing a dog.  He was charged with attempted second degree murder, cruelty to animals and aggravated domestic battery.
