The city of Wichita is asking for proposals for new management of the Wichita Ice Center. Mayor Brandon Whipple confirmed that during his weekly news briefing Thursday.
City Council members have heard complaints about maintenance and other issues at the Ice Center in recent months.
The Ice Center is managed by Genesis Health Clubs, and the current contract expires in January. The Ice Center was constructed in 1996 and it was managed by the city for several years until Genesis was given the contract to manage the facility.
Whipple said he was surprised to find that the city’s request for bids includes the possibility of selling the Ice Center, but he thinks that city staff included that possibility as a way of testing the market. He said he is committed to making the Ice Center continues to provide high quality services to the community.
