An inmate in the Sedgwick County jail was attacked by another inmate with a makeshift weapon. The incident happened Wednesday in a housing area of the jail.
A statement from Sheriff Jeff Easter said the suspect, 36-year-old Jermall Campbell, left his housing area shortly before 2 p.m. and approached the entry to the victim’s housing area. When the victim opened the door, he was attacked, suffering seven lacerations. The victim was treated onsite by medical staff and did not need to go to a hospital.
Deputies quickly moved in and took control of the area.
Easter said Campbell is being held on first degree murder charges, along with criminal possession of a firearm and gambling. He is also wanted on federal charges. Investigators discovered that the victim of the attack is a nephew of the victim in Campbell’s first degree murder case.
Campbell is being held for a shooting that happened last June in the 1700 block of North Harding. 47-year-old Deandre Freeman was killed and a 53-year-old man was injured. Police said a disturbance broke out among the three men and shots were fired.
