Vandalism leaves damage at parks across Wichita

Wichita officials are facing costly repairs after a series of vandalism incidents at parks, playgrounds and swimming pools across the city.

Mayor Brandon Whipple called attention to the problem during his weekly news briefing Thursday, and the city’s park and recreation director, Troy Houtman, displayed photos of the damage.

The incidents included a control box for a splash pad that was knocked off a wall at a swimming pool, and damage that was done inside a building at the pool.  Someone used a blow torch to damage a slide and equipment at Emery Park.   Houtman said the cost of the repairs will be around $5,000, but the Wichita Community Foundation has offered to pay half the cost of repairs.

Houtman said the damage not only is costly to repair, but it delays projects to upgrade and improve park and playground facilities.   He said people should notify the city if they see any damage at park and recreation facilities, and he’s urging people to contact Crime Stoppers if they have information on the people causing the damage.
