Sedgwick County releases video of teen’s struggle with juvenile staff

Sedgwick County released video Friday from the Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center regarding the September arrest of 17-year-old Cedric Lofton, who died after being restrained following a struggle with Center staff.

The county released a website to access the video, but there were problems accessing the site late in the day.   The link is set up through Sedgwick County’s web page and some of it may be disturbing to watch.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett announced this week that no charges would be filed because of state law that protects staff workers acting in self defense. State lawmakers are taking another look at the “Stand Your Ground” law following Bennett’s announcement.

Sedgwick County is creating a community task force to look at policies and practices in the juvenile justice system as a result of Lofton’s death.  County commissioners and Wichita City Council members will take part in a news conference Tuesday morning at 11:30 to explain more details on the task force.
